Privacy

Privacy is the ability of an individual to be left alone, out of public view, and in control of information relating to him or her.

There are two concepts of privacy that are relevant for the SafeTRIP project – the physical and the informational. Physical privacy protection is the ability to prevent intrusion in a personal physical space, for example having knowledge about the location of one’s home. Informational privacy protection controls the collection and sharing of information about people, for example connecting a person with the location of his home.

The concept of privacy therefore overlaps, but does not coincide, with the concept of data protection.

The right to privacy is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 12) as well as in the European Convention of Human Rights (Article 8).
