Road Operators

Road operators own and manage high-capacity motorways that connect large conurbations to each other and are the logistics backbone of the road network. Road operators have identified the following as their core needs:

-     Filter and send traffic information to drivers,

-     Capture data from traffic officers on the network,

-     Track hazardous and large vehicles,

-     Allocate parking spaces for hazardous and large vehicles, and

-     Automate detection of events and incidents along the road network.

The operations of these large roads are also subject to both European and local regulations designed to protect the public. There are regulations on the handling of emergency calls from both phones and sensors in vehicles. Space needs to be provided to allow drivers of commercial vehicles to have rest time. Provisional license holders need to be monitored as part of their qualification process. Data gathered on the movement of vehicles through the road network needs to be protected from misuse to obey regulations on data protection.
