Security

Information transmission

Drivers need know what information is being transmitted from their vehicle to any services that they have called to assist them at any time. For instance, there are concerns that microphones and cameras installed for emergency response could be used for other purposes without consent. There is also a reasonable concern over the ability of any service provider to have the ability to track and log the vehicle’s location at all times. Drivers want their location revealed when needed, but not allow it to be available continuously to a service provider.

Retention of data

Drivers need to know what information is being collected and retained, that it is encrypted and handled in a secure manner, why it needs to be retained, and that the driver actively “opts-in”. They need assurances that service providers do not provide or sell data on to other parties or use it for other purposes. Any data collected outside of emergency services and roadside assistance - for example for monitoring traffic flows - should be anonymous, without identifying information, and destroyed quickly after it is use.
